At first whiff it seems Mr Foster has done the classic fantasy trope of “chosen one” to vanquish the big bad evil, but this whole story is a happy subversion of most fantasy tropes!

Some of the story didn’t make much sense, and the entire ending is just mad but I came out of it with a positive feeling. Back then I read sci-fi and fantasy almost exclusively, and this author ADF was one of my favorites; in particular, his Spellsinger series. Overall, I’d say furries and fantasy fans alike would enjoy themselves as long as they speellsinger looking for fun and not something deep, so if you’re considering, then give this series a go.

It is a quick light read with some interesting concepts anthropomorphic animals, spellsinging, and some of the focus on politics.
For this reason, for quite I while I avoided Alan Dean Foster completely, partly because of this, and partly because of all the tie-in novels. Spiders are not included in the main society, which has centipedes and various insects like beetles.
Having re-read it recently, however, I’ve noticed several inconstancies which really detract from the enjoyment of the book for instance, in the first book horses are non-sentient, but can talk in later books. The remaining six books chronicle other random adventures of Jon-Tom and his larcenous sidekick Mudge the otter who speaks with either a cockney or Austrailian accent. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
This is the most unique fantasy novel I have ever read. This is also similar with those stories where the protagonist is taken from Earth as a boy to return a man. I received this book as a gift, having not read the rest of the Spellsinger series.

The quests he undertakes for his wizardly mentor send him to distant countries, where spellsibger meets whimsical creatures speaking in outlandish accents. Narnia meet Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
Some passages I liked: So thanks for making a good read that just gets better as I age! This series is quite amusing, and in a way I related to Jon-Tom.
