Triplanetary was published inwith revisions by Smith to make it a prequel to the Lensman series, but was originally serialized in Amazing Stories magazine in This offends his complex religious sensibilities, and arguably for the wrong reasonhe concludes that the “near-miss” theory is incorrect.

As always, Doc had worked it out in great detail, but never so far as I know wrote it down I tried to read Triplantary when I was younger, and gave up on the book pretty quickly. I just started reading the series again a week ago and have ripped through to The Children of the Lens” already. The aliens were surprisingly well-thought-out. The Arisians further promise him that no entity unworthy of the Lens will ever be permitted to wear it, but that he and his successors will have to discover for themselves most of its abilities. It’s something we can stand to dream about again now.
