Oct 12, Lars Brownworth rated it it was amazing. The Sicilian Vespers reads like a greater-than life drama, a conflict between Pope and Emperor, with all the major powers of the Mediterranean also playing a role, an entangled, passioned political intrigue with the occasional battle thrown in.
Runciman offers a series of top-down facts. Grandma Weitzel would not be pleased. This is also an excellent guide to the historical background to Dante’s Divine Comedy, forming almost a Who’s Who of the political figures in it, and providing insight into their placement in Hell, Paradise or Purgatory.

Runciman follows Godfrey’s time as leader including the Battle at Ascalon and efforts to solidify the realm in southern Syria. The writing style is superb and engaging and it is runcimam a sweeping overview of Mediterranean history in the thirteenth century with the Sicilian Vespers merely providing the hook.

Runciman uses the first part of his narrative to set the stage of what happened and why during the Sicilian Vespers. Almost half the book is used to set the stage for the first crusade.
